About Our Coaches

      Coach Dirk Moonen
    Dirk earned his Prévôt d’Armes degree from the Académie Royale D'Armes de Belgique (Royal Academy of Arms of Belgium) and from the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association, and is a USFA certified Coach III in all weapons. He is also a member of the Society of American Fight Directors. He teaches both classes and private lessons in sport fencing as well in theatrical fencing from October till June. The summer months are spent attending coaches' clinics and colleges, here and in Europe, with the world's most successful masters in order to offer an updated product to his students. Presently, he is working on his master's of fencing (Maîtrise d'Armes) and is authoring a book on the dueling sword, slated for publication in April 2008. He is a USFA certified Armorer II and Referee. He holds a master's in International Management from Thunderbird American Graduate School, and a bachelor's in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia. He is fluent in English, French, Dutch, German and Spanish.
 
      Coach Philip Meidell
    Philip is currently a student at ASU, majoring in English. Prior to concentrating on his education and assisting the head coach with club activities, Philip demonstrated an outstanding level of achievement. Among his many titles are North American Cup Championship, and a ranking of 5th in the United States at the Junior Level. Philip teaches both classes and private lessons.
 
      Coach Amber Nichols
    Amber has been fencing for approximately 8 years and currently attends ASU. Her major is English and her minor is Astro Physics. Amber has been a nationally ranked competitor and teaches both classes and private lessons. Amber is well-loved by her students and brings to the club a unique combination of technical expertise and personal warmth.
 
      Coach Rolly (Rolando) Arroyo
    Rolly has been fencing since he was a teenager in New York Ciy. Rolly continues to be a successful competition fencer as well as a coach. Rolly brings with him a unique ability to generate competitive drive in his students. He is not only technically strong, but also possesses great depth in tactics. He is still fencing competitively, even though he is a young 60+. He recently fenced in a veterans’ competition and re-earned his C rank. Rolly teaches both classes and private lessons.
 
      Coach Katy Lew
    Katy Lew was a member of the 2005 Women’s Epee Team which placed 6th in the US. She, like all of our competition coaches is a seasoned competitor. Katy brings with her not only her charming smile but a knowledge of the sport and an enthusiastic approach which is seldom seen. We are most pleased to have Katy on our staff.
