Coach Sewall “Skip” Shurtz

Phoenix Falcons Fencing Club founder Sewall “Skip” Shurtz competed in both foil and epee in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. He was the 1954 U.S. National Epee Champion, Silver Medalist in the 1955 Pan American Games, the 1956 U.S. National Foil Champion, and the first fencer to win all three events (foil, epee, saber) at the Pacific Coast Championships, to name just a few of his awards.

Coach Shurtz passed away in 2018 at the age of 84.
